The Prophecy of Isaiah - Part 22 Discussion
Isa 5:16-23 The Lord Shall Be Exalted In Judgment
Isa 5:16 But the LORD of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness.
Isa 5:17 Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat.
Isa 5:18 Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope:
Isa 5:19 That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it!
Isa 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
Isa 5:21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!
Isa 5:22 Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:
Isa 5:23 Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!
"The Lord... shall be exalted in judgment..." That is a true revelation, and that revelation makes manifests those who are truly exalting the Lord.
We are told the builder of a house is worthy of more honor the the house He builds:
Heb 3:3 For this man [Christ] was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.
God's house is His people:
Mat 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
2Co 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
1Pe 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
God's house is in the process of being built. In time it will encompass all of mankind. But that building process involves the judgment of the kingdom of the first man Adam within every man. We are living that judgment. It is the judgment and the destruction of the corrupt kingdom of our old man, which will exalt the Lord. When that judgment is concluded this is, without exception, the conclusion of the kingdom of "the first man Adam" within us all:
1Co 15:50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
When the Lord's house replaces the house of our old man, the Lord Himself will be exalted in that judgement:
Isa 5:16 But the LORD of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness.
Let's ask the question; What does "But the Lord...shall be exalted in judgment" mean? Before we answer that question we need to take notice that the word 'but' connects today's study with our last study, so here are the last three verses from our last study:
Isa 5:13 Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.
Isa 5:14 Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.
Isa 5:15 And the mean man shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled:
These verses are describing the fruits which the judgment God is bringing upon His own vineyard, His own house, and the connecting word 'but' is contrasting the clean and righteous ways of God with the corruption and sins of His own people. That is the answer to the question: What does "but the Lord shall be exalted in judgment" mean? It is His own house which is being judged at this time, and "God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness" is the contrast being drawn between the ways of God and the ways of His vineyard, His own house, His own people. When our carnal-minded old man is judged and enters into 'sheol', "hell", the grave, then our new man is exalted and 'the Lord of hosts is exalted in judgment'.
1Pe 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
The Hebrew word for 'holy' is "qadosh" (Isa 5:18), and it is defined as 'sacred'. It is translated variously as 'saint, sanctuary, and holy'. The word 'holy' is by far the most common translation for this Hebrew word 'qadosh'. When we read "God that is holy shall be sanctified...", the part which reads "that is holy shall be sanctified" is translated from but two Hebrew words which are very similar. Those two Hebrew words are 'qadosh' (H6918), and the word 'qadash' (H6942). God, who is sacred, is cleansed by His righteousness, and He is contrasted with His vineyard which is defiled and must be judged for it sins.
The physical temple was considered by the Jewish world to be the house of God in ancient Israel up through the time when Christ was here in a body of flesh and blood. But then Christ came down to us out of heaven and told us this:
Mat 12:1 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.
Mat 12:2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.
Mat 12:3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;
Mat 12:4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?
Mat 12:5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?
Mat 12:6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.
Christ is our high priest, and later, when Christ's disciples were marveling over "the buildings of the temple", Christ told them this concerning the entire physical realm:
Mat 24:1 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.
Mat 24:2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
Anyone who at that time thought that was exclusively a spiritual statement, had a rude awakening in 70 A.D. when they were eating their own children in the famine within the city, and the Romans literally and physically left not one stone of the physical temple upon another. Yes, I am very much aware that it appears as if Christ were speaking specifically about the physical temple, which was indeed destroyed in 70 A.D., but we are told in very clear language that those same words apply to the entire physical "temporal" realm:
2Co 4:18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
The holy spirit had Peter to tell us the exact same thing:
2Pe 3:1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:
2Pe 3:2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:
2Pe 3:3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
2Pe 3:4 And saying, Where is the promise of his [physical] coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the [physical] creation.
2Pe 3:5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
2Pe 3:6 Whereby the [physical] world that then was, being [physically] overflowed with water, [physically] perished:
2Pe 3:7 But the [physical] heavens and the [physical] earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
2Pe 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
2Pe 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the [physical] earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
2Pe 3:11 Seeing then that all these [physical] things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
2Pe 3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
The destruction of the temple was both a physical and a spiritual reality. The destruction of the earth is also both a physical and a spiritual reality.
Heb 12:25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:
Heb 12:26 Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.
Heb 12:27 And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
Heb 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
Heb 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire.
But the physical application of these prophecies is the 'will be', the climactic consummation-of-the-eons application of all of these prophecies about Christ being "exalted in judgment". The way Christ is exalted in judgment spiritually and inwardly is the present, the 'is', application of the judgment of Christ which must "begin at the house of God" within His elect. This judgment, which is 'exalting Christ', has been taking place in the lives of every person in whom He dwells since the Christ began building His church, which is His and His Father's house:
1Pe 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
Now we are about to be told what happens to us during our time of being judged by Christ and His Word:
Isa 5:17 Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat.
We have already heard "the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat" when we were told the same in every previous chapter of Isaiah:
Isa 1:19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:
Isa 1:20 But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.Isa 2:11 The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.
Isa 2:12 For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:Isa 2:17 And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.
Isa 3:16 Moreover the LORD saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:
Isa 3:17 Therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will discover their secret parts.
Isa 3:18 In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon,Isa 3:25 Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.
Isa 3:26 And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she being desolate shall sit upon the ground.Isa 4:4 When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.
There it is! The exalting of the Lord, the fat places being laid waste, the lofty being made low and the feeding of God's lambs are all taking place within us simultaneously. And it is God's prophets, His new vineyard, His new house, His new church by which His judgments are being revealed and His lambs who are all being fed upon those waste places of the kingdom of our old man, "the waste places of the fat ones...":
Eph 3:9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
Eph 3:10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,
All these judgments upon us are "the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world has been hid in God".
"The spirit of judgment and... the spirit of burning", includes the woes in the rest of the verses we will cover in this study:
The word 'draw' in this verse is:

Of the 36 entries for this word in the Old Testament 21 are differing forms of the English word 'draw', and the first entry gives us a feel for what is meant by "Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity..." (Isa 5:18).
Here is that first entry which reflects the same meaning given this Hebrew word 'mashak' here in Isa 5:18:
Exo 12:21 Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover.
Israel was not to "draw out and take" just any lamb. The lamb chosen had to be "a lamb without blemish and without spot":
1Pe 1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
What we are being told is that it is we who have 'drawn out and taken to ourselves' a life of sin and rebellion against our own God who has given us all we have. What we are being told is that we have gone to great lengths to select out a way of life which is in direct rebellion against our own Savior, thereby becoming great ropes strong enough to draw a cart.
Then we take it upon ourselves to say:
Isa 5:19 That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it!
We are so willing to challenge Christ to come down from the cross and judge us while we are being given by Him to reject Him and all He has given us and all He has done for us. Remember, it was "those Jews which believed on Him"; it was those very Jews who had eaten His 'loaves and fishes', it was you and I who wanted to kill Him:
Joh 8:30 As he spake these words, many believed on him.
Joh 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
Joh 8:39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
Joh 8:40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
Joh 8:41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
Joh 8:42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
Joh 8:43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
It is of utmost importance that we realize that the reason we do not understand Christ's words is, according to Christ, "because [we] cannot hear [Christ's] word".
That is why we are all guilty of saying, "Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it!" In other words, it is we who say to Christ while He is being crucified by us:
Luk 23:35 And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.
Isa 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
Who among us has not put evil for good, and good for evil, when we believed the lies of our leaders? Who among us has not put darkness for light and light for darkness, when we taught others those very same lies? Who among us has not put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter, when we were living our own lives within those lying doctrines of devils?
But the day comes when we are judged and it is then that we are told:
Eze 3:1 Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, eat that thou findest; eat this roll, and go speak unto the house of Israel.
Eze 3:2 So I opened my mouth, and he caused me to eat that roll.
Eze 3:3 And he said unto me, Son of man, cause thy belly to eat, and fill thy bowels with this roll that I give thee. Then did I eat it; and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness.
Eze 3:4 And he said unto me, Son of man, go, get thee unto the house of Israel, and speak with my words unto them.
"Get thee unto the house of Israel [and] show the house unto the house of Israel... [Show the vineyard unto the vineyard] and let them measure the pattern... that they may be ashamed of their iniquities."
Eze 43:10 Thou son of man, shew the house to the house of Israel, that they may be ashamed of their iniquities: and let them measure the pattern.
The word of God is line upon line and precept upon precept. So it is in the book of Revelation that we learn that while the knowledge of what is in this "roll" is "in my mouth as honey for sweetness", such is not the case when it gets to our bellies:
Rev 10:9 And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.
Rev 10:10 And I took the little book out of the angel's hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.
The bitterness of the curses we must endure continue:
Isa 5:21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!
Here is a verse from this same prophet which demonstrates graphically how all of us are both wise and prudent in our own eyes:
Isa 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
The most graphic examples of "our righteousnesses, [which] are as filthy rags" to God is this statement made by Job:
Job 27:5 God forbid that I should justify you: till I die I will not remove mine integrity from me.
Job 27:6 My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.
Job 27:7 Let mine enemy be as the wicked, and he that riseth up against me as the unrighteous.
Let's ask the question, Who rose up against Job? Here is one such person:
Job 40:1 Moreover the LORD answered Job, and said,
Job 40:2 Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproveth God, let him answer it.
Job 40:3 Then Job answered the LORD, and said,
Job 40:4 Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth.
Job 40:5 Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.
Job 40:6 Then answered the LORD unto Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
Job 40:7 Gird up thy loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.
Job 40:8 Wilt thou also disannul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be righteous?
These are all words "proceeding out of the mouth of God" and by which we must live (Mat 4:4). Like Job we are all wise and prudent in our own eyes, and in our own sight. At this time we all are:
Isa 5:22 Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:
This is not the positive application of the words 'wine or strong drink'. Rather it is the drunkeness of those who are drunk on the wine of the fornication of the false doctrines of the great harlot:
Rev 17:1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
Rev 17:2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
The wine and strong drink being drunk by us at this stage in our spiritual experience are the doctrines and the life we live by those doctrines of "the great whore who sits upon many waters", and living under those doctrines we:
Isa 5:23 Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!
This is just how far away from the mind of God we are at this time in our "one event" (Ecc 9:2):
Isa 29:19 The meek also shall increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
Isa 29:20 For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off:
Isa 29:21 That make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of nought.
Jer 7:8 Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit.
Jer 7:9 Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not;
Jer 7:10 And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?
Jer 7:11 Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the LORD.
The Hebrew word translated 'delivered' in Jer 7:10 is:
H5337
נָצַל
nâtsal
naw-tsal'
A primitive root; to snatch away, whether in a good or a bad sense: - X at all, defend, deliver (self), escape, X without fail, part, pluck, preserve, recover, rescue, rid, save, spoil, strip, X surely, take (out).
This is how this Hebrew word 'natsal' is translated:

Clearly the vast majority of these entries are best translated by some form of the word 'deliver'.
Gen 32:10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
Gen 32:11 Deliver me [H5337: natsal] , I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.
This is Jacob just before he wrestled with Christ all night. This is the night his name was changed to Israel, meaning 'one who prevailed with God'. He is asking Christ "deliver me, I pray you from my brother, from the hand of Esau", from whom Jacob had stolen his brother Esau's blessing, and from whom he had bought His brother Esau's birthright as the first born, for a bowl of red pottage. The whole story typifies how our new man replaces and supplants our old man.
But the idea of being delivered and saved for the purpose of continuing in our sins will not be tolerated, and God is in the process of judging us for living by these words of Jeremiah 7:
Jer 7:8 Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit.
Jer 7:9 Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not;
Jer 7:10 And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?
Jer 7:11 Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the LORD.
But God's judgments are always for our good in the end:
Isa 26:9 With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
